Applied Mathematics Infinities: Unlocking Boundless Futures

As the only teacher-training program within the College of Science and Engineering at National University of Tainan, the Department of Applied Mathematics is committed to developing professionals with a solid foundation in both applied mathematics and mathematics education. Our program offers diverse career pathways in applied mathematics, artificial intelligence and information technology, financial data analysis, and mathematics education. By equipping students with essential analytical and problem-solving skills, equip them with the skills needed to excel in today’s dynamic world.

We actively support the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and organize career development seminars and initiatives that empower students to thrive in an evolving global landscape. Our dedicated faculty and teaching assistants provide guidance throughout students’ academic journeys, collaborating closely with the university to foster excellence in higher education, community engagement, and social impact. Through continuous innovation and transformation, we are paving the way for a brighter future.

Setting Sail Toward Infinite Mathematical Possibilities

Our department is a vibrant hub that offers an open and enriching academic environment designed to foster curiosity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

We encourage students to participate in diverse activities and camps to broaden their academic horizons and enhance their practical abilities. Our expert faculty, composed of specialists in various fields of applied mathematics, is dedicated to delivering a comprehensive curriculum that equips students with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to excel in today’s fast-evolving world.

Diverse Curricula and Resources to Empower Students for Future Challenges

Our department offers a wide range of academic programs designed to develop students’ mathematical foundations, applied mathematical skills, and teaching expertise, aligning with the ever-changing demands of the job market. Recently, we have actively updated our curriculum, and starting from the 2025 academic year, we are introducing the “Data Science Module” and “Mathematics Education Module” to align with societal trends and students’ needs, providing them with broader learning opportunities.

Beyond course offerings, we provide abundant resources, such as a 3D printing lab, research project rooms, and various engaging mathematics education tools to support in-depth learning and exploration. Additionally, regular career seminars offer valuable guidance and inspiration, helping students navigate and plan their future career paths.

A Century of Legacy: The Evolution of Our Department

The history of our department is deeply rooted in the century-long legacy of Tainan University. Before 2004, the university was renowned for its dedication to training elementary school teachers. Our department’s origins trace back to the Department of Mathematics and Science Education, which was officially renamed the Department of Mathematics Education in 1998. Throughout the transitions from a five-year teachers’ college to a four-year teachers’ university, our department consistently upheld its mission of cultivating elementary school educators.

However, the university underwent significant changes in 2004, transitioning into a comprehensive university amid challenges such as demographic shifts and the declining birth rate. In response, our department began planning its transformation in 2007. On August 1, 2010, it was officially renamed the Department of Applied Mathematics.

This change reflects not only our growing focus on applied mathematics but also our determination to pursue excellence in the face of change. The Department of Applied Mathematics continues to honor its rich heritage while equipping students with professional knowledge and applied skills to tackle future societal challenges and contribute to the university’s ongoing development.
