【活動簡介】
The rheologist Markus Reiner once remarked that “the mountains flowed,” highlighting that glacier ice behaves like a highly viscous fluid over long timescales. This talk presents the development and application of stable finite element methods for complex real-world flows, with a particular emphasis on glacier dynamics.
I will first introduce stabilized finite element methods and their integration with deep neural networks for efficient pore-scale flow simulations. I will then discuss glacier applications, including basal-crevasse opening near the grounding line of tidewater glaciers and nonlinear Stokes modeling of mountain-glacier flow. A case study of Xue Mountain Glacial Cirque No. 2 in Taiwan examines the effects of ice thickness and basal sliding on glacier velocity and stress fields. Finally, I will introduce ongoing work on three-dimensional glacier-bed evolution, where glacier flow is coupled with a basal-erosion law to explore the long-term transformation from a V-shaped valley to a U-shaped glacial valley.
Together, these studies illustrate how stable numerical methods can connect flow processes across vastly different spatial and temporal scales.
